Perfume Notes… What are they? Each fragrance is composed of aromatic notes released by the aromatic oils that make it up.

Imagine that the composition of a perfume is like a pyramid divided into three levels according to their intensity. The perfume pyramid provides a more accurate picture of the perfume and its development after application to the skin.

There are three notes and they are called “top notes”, “heart notes” and “base notes”.

Let’s see what each category offers.

Top Notes

Top notes are the first elements of perfumes that one smells after the first application and that evaporate within a few seconds. But in some perfumes the top notes can last up to 15 minutes.

Heart Notes (or middle notes)

Heart notes (or middle notes) are the scents of the aromas that we begin to perceive after the first 20 minutes and constitute the heart of the aromatic composition. They have a longer duration than the top ones and can last up to 3-4 hours. They are essentially the ones that outline the character of the perfume.

Base Notes

Base notes are the elements of the perfume that are released after 40 minutes and that change the aroma, while at the same time giving it a deeper duration that can last up to 10-12 hours. Aromatic oils in this category act as a fixative on which all the previous notes sit and do not let them get evaporated easily.

Before analysing the categories, let us first explain what a perfume consists of and its composition.

Perfumes are composed of two main elements: the aromatic alcohol and the pure essence. The pure essence is the substance of the perfume that is very concentrated, so it is diluted with alcohol.

Both are a combination of 3 notes: Top (main notes), heart (middle notes) and base (base notes).

So how does a perfume last?

Depending on the order and intensity with which its notes are released, but mainly with the amount of the essence oil concentration in it.

Let’s see them in detail:

Eau de Cologne

It has the lightest concentration since it contains 2-5% of the essence oil. It is obviously the cheapest of all and is always sold in large sizes, as you will have to spray it a lot, in order to perceive its intensity.

Estimated Duration: 1-2 hours approximately

Eau de Toilette

It contains only 5-15% of the essence oil and its intensity does not last long. It is the kind of refreshing aroma that is suitable mainly for warmer climates. You will usually find it in a large package, because you will also need to spray a lot.

Estimated Duration: 2-3 hours approximately

Eau de Parfum

It offers an essence oil concentration of 10-20%. It tends to have enough strength in duration, with the “heart” being its strongest element, which becomes “visible” after its peak evaporates. It is the second most intense perfume on the market.

Estimated Duration: 4-5 hours approximately

Eau de Parfum PLUS

It is sometimes referred to as pure essence, perfume extract or extrait de parfum. It has as the characteristic of the essence oil concentration being somewhere between 20-40%. However, because it can be quite strong, we apply lightly during the day and more generously on a night out.

1. Good Hydration

Keep your skin richly hydrated before perfuming, with a body lotion, body butter, body oil or body yogurt. This way, you lock in the moisture, making the perfume that you will wear later not evaporate easily.

Pro tip: Choose a cream of the same aromatic series for longer duration.

2. Good shaking

 

Shake the perfume bottle each time, always well before perfuming, so that the double perfume essence with which we enhance all our fragrances is mixed.

3. Perfuming points

 

Apply the perfume to the warmer areas of your body; behind the ear, at the base of the neck, at the décolleté, on the inside of our wrists or elbows, in clean, hydrated skin.

4. Fragrance from a distance

 

Always perfume from a distance and with double aromatization at every point, and never, ever rub the points where you perfume!

5. Perfume “Rest”

 

Let the perfume “calm down” … In a few minutes the perfume notes are tied to our skin.

6. The final touch…

 

Spray perfume in the air forming a cloud and then “pass” through it, so that the perfume droplets remain on you and the perfume takes over!

Perfume Storage: The fragrance is sensitive to light and heat and should be stored in a cool place.
